Our multi-decade journey to Destin started in the late 80’s when Jon, as a student at Memphis State University (as it was known then), traveled down with friends on spring break and began the love affair with the area we now call home. It was there in Memphis, where Jon met Jennifer, now happily married for 30 years in 2022!
After graduating with a degree in Finance, Jon enjoyed a successful 25-year career as an institutional fixed-income Investment Banker. He achieved the ranks of Managing Director, being recruited to and working at both of the largest banks in Canada and the U.S., as well as one of the most well-known primary dealers and investment houses on Wall Street.
Jennifer, a transplant to the south from the midwest, graduated with a degree in education, but shortly thereafter, decided to put her teaching career on permanent hold to focus on raising our 3 boys.
While vacationing with the boys in the early 00’s, we rediscovered the allure of the remarkable, one-of-a-kind, powdered sugary soft, white-sand beaches of Destin. Numerous flashlight wielding, bucket swinging, net scooping and laughter filled night-crabbing experiences on spring and fall breaks (our favorite time of year to come), opened anew the magic of the area through the eyes of our children. It was on Easter, during one of these trips, that we started to kick around the idea of buying a place of our own to use on family vacations, while renting by owner the additional weeks of the year (widely, no longer an option due to local manager requirements imposed by local officials).
And that is just what we did! In 2009, we bought our 1st property and spent several months fixing it up. As our boys grew older, Jennifer found herself with additional time on her hands, and instead of going back to teaching, she decided to be the “face and voice” of our new endeavor. She loves talking with our future guests and apparently, they love her as well, as almost all our many reviews mention her by name.
Although, not without a few bumps and bruises along the way (oil spill, fire at one of our 1st homes requiring total gut job, Covid, etc.), we enjoyed our experience so much, that we took what we had learned with the 1st property and added another in 2012. We added once again in 2014, improving our processes and efficiency each time. By the end of 2015, it was apparent that the business was getting a bit too big to manage from 7 hours away. We also saw a need by other out-of-town owners, like we had been, for professional management by people who knew what they were doing. In mid 2016, Jon decided to retire from the corporate fast track and apply his corporate experience to building the rental management side of our business.
Now firmly rooted as "locals" since 2016 we have further evolved into full-time property management with our own homes and those we manage for others. We feel we have learned how to exceed the low expectations set by the big management companies to offer bigger returns and more focused attention. We would like to introduce Boomerang Vacation Rentals!
We look forward to working with you soon - as a vacationer, property owner or both!
Jon and Jennifer Duke
